The gap

Available isn't the same as used

Many services and opportunities are already there. The harder question is why people do or don't choose to use them.

Sometimes people need better information, more confidence or a chance to talk things through. Sometimes the service itself needs to change. Deciding not to take something up can also be an informed choice.

Our approach

Trust-led human connection

We work through trusted spaces and relationships that already exist, such as barbershops, a university campus, family settings and community venues. People meet, talk honestly and come back.

That continued contact supports participation and lasting relationships. Learning goes both ways: people get information they can act on, and organisations hear what helps, what gets in the way and what might need to change.

What people are experiencing

Through Jollof Nights™, people have reported feeling less alone, more comfortable discussing difficult issues and better informed about the choices available to them. Our session records, participant feedback and practical experiences help us understand what is working and where we need to improve.

What our experience shows

Trust opens the door to participation

In our 2025 Greenwich pilot, 9 sessions in 4 barbershops drew 187 attendances. Of the men who returned feedback forms, 95% said the session had a positive impact on their wellbeing and 97% said they would come again.

Men described understanding mental health differently, talking about problems without shame and thinking about their actions as fathers. The pilot also set up a two-way referral route with Oxleas NHS Talking Therapies. In one documented case, a routine blood pressure check in a barbershop found a dangerously high reading; the man was advised to get urgent help and told us the next morning he was at hospital.

Health is one area where this matters. The same trust supports shared learning, honest feedback on services and better decisions about what communities need.

Our Strategic NHS Value & Cost Avoidance Report models potential NHS savings from a proposed three-year scale-up to 7,000 men: £7.59 million in a conservative scenario and £16.73 million in a pilot-informed scenario. These are modelled estimates, not savings already realised.

How we work

What we already run

  • Sessions in trusted spaces people already use, planned with the host and run by trained facilitators.
  • Registration, check-in and a physical headcount on the night, kept separately from digital check-ins.
  • Optional participant reflections, facilitator reflections and a record for each session.
  • Topic voting with trusted spaces, so future conversations follow what people say matters to them.

Reporting is anonymous and aggregated by default. We don't give organisations access to people's relationships or personal information.
